1. Elegant & Comfortable Attire (Smart Casual)
Because our ceremonies are unhurried and involve sitting on traditional tatami floors or woven floor cushions, we recommend smart casual, relaxed-fitting wardrobe choices.
Flowing Silhouettes: Long midi/maxi skirts, wide-leg trousers, or tailored trousers with stretch offer complete freedom of movement during seated moments without compromising sophistication.
Mindful Sleeve Lengths: Tops with fitted or neatly tapered sleeves prevent fabric from touching delicate ceramics or sweeping across the tea preparation hearth.
Modest Necklines: In keeping with the serene, contemplative atmosphere—and out of consideration for the bowing rituals exchanged between host and guest—modest necklines are ideal.
Fabrics to Avoid: Heavy, rigid denim or restricted tailoring can make floor sitting uncomfortable and hinder your ability to relax.
2. Essential Protocol for the Tea Room
To preserve the pristine environment of our sanctuary and protect our handcrafted artisan tea utensils, we ask guests to observe three simple customs:
・Fresh White Socks
To honor the sacredness of the tatami mats, bare feet are strictly prohibited. We kindly ask guests to bring a fresh, unworn pair of clean white socks (or traditional white tabi) to slip on immediately before stepping into the tea room.
・Preserving Delicate Artware (Remove All Jewelry)
During the ceremony, you will hold handcrafted, historic ceramic tea bowls (chawan) and lacquered tea caddies (natsume). Rings, watches, bracelets, and long necklaces can easily scratch or chip these one-of-a-kind heirlooms. Please place all jewelry and metal timepieces securely inside your bag prior to entry.
・Subtle & Fragrance-Free Atmosphere
An essential dimension of the ceremony is the sensory appreciation of freshly whisked ceremonial matcha and high-grade seasonal incense. We ask that guests refrain from wearing heavy perfumes, colognes, or strongly scented lotions so that all guests may enjoy these subtle aromas.
3. Experiencing the Ritual in Kimono
Attending your ceremony in a traditional kimono creates a truly magical memory. If you choose to rent a kimono in Kyoto for your visit to Towa Kyoto:
Select a refined, daily wear silk kimono such as Komon or a solid-toned Iromuji.
Mention to your kimono dresser that you will be participating in a tea ceremony so they can tie your sash (obi) with comfort and posture in mind.
